What:
composer/sound designer Lauri des Marais will perform a selection
of her visionary new soundworks, including "Towards Harmony".
When: March 18, 2006
Where: Deep Listening Institute, Pauline
Oliveros Foundation in Kingston, NY,
The compositions of Lauri des Marais (deh-mah-RAY) are primarily
synthesized streams between shape, mood, and pattern texture
construction: this she refers to as Classical Technology,
which create Stories in Sound.
des Marais began playing piano in 1994, and eventually began
recording with synthesizers and "musique concrète"
techniques. For live performance, she developed a form of
movement she calls Movement So Still With Sound -- incorporating
themes of traditional Eastern movement -- to translate the
often subtle dimensional qualities of her music.
She has studied the practice of Deep Listening with composer
Pauline Oliveros. Her repertoire includes a performance with
Pauline Oliveros at Plan B Evolving Arts (in celebration of
Deep Listening), and at the 1999 premier of the Big Sur Experimental
Music Festival, hosted by the Henry Miller Library, along
with various soundart shows in Australia.
Current collaborations include:
• Sun Rushing In, a performance duo with Susan DeLeo,
• video/music DVD projects with Mark Fischer, The Mountain
(TBR 2006), and
• performances with Kris Thompson.
Here are some previous reactions from the media to des Marais'
works:
"Lauri des Marais is on the cutting edge of experimental
music." - American Composers Forum
“It is wonderful to find some modern classical that
is both avant-garde yet melodically engaging, interesting,
and appealing, technologically innovative yet listener friendly
…Beautiful, haunting, engaging Stimuli!” - Lloyd
Barrett, Radio 4ZZZ, Australia
“...I discover Lauri des Marais, certainly an artist
to keep in sight. I love (Stimuli). Very strong. A very
striking record.” - François Couture, CFLX,
Quebec, Canada
“Lauri des Marais (creates) dark soundscapes, huzzing
thrums of quiet and oblique sound... (with) butoh-like development.”
- Ted Drozdowski, Boston Phoenix
“(Lauri des Marais’) works are equally inventive
and musically compelling.” - Dean Suzuki, Progression
magazine.
KRIS THOMPSON BIO
Accompanying Lauri for live performance on theremin is Kris
Thompson, whose audio-spiritual journeying has found him bridging
the various modalities of rock, psychedelic, experimental,
and ambient musical expressions. His approach to the theremin
is unique: while not as outwardly melodic as other practiontioners,
he achieves an evocative split-brain confluence of harmonic
awareness and ethereal ornamentation -- an ideal complement
to Lauri's butoh-inflected sound design and performance physicality.
Kris currently performs with The Lothars, Dear Old Stockholm
Syndrome, and in various collaborative projects.
